Traffic is routed through the city a network of roads including I/37, II/324 in the north-south direction, i.e. from Hradec Králové to Chrudim. Road I/36 to Lázně Bohdaneč, Chlumec nad Cidlinou and Poděbrady runs in a north-westerly direction. The west – east route is created by roads I/2 from Prague and Přelouč and II/322 running through the city towards Hrochův Týnec and continuing via road I/36 to Holice, Svitavy, Brno. Connection to motorway D1 is possible by heading south. Motorway D11 north of city can be accessed through a temporary junction near the village of Libišany; once completed there will be a direct connection to road R35.
A number of supermarkets are found within the city where vehicles may be parked free of charge. These car parks offer the chance to park-and-ride by changing to the public mode of transport.
