In Pardubice there are 16 full duration primary schools (years 1-9), 1 part duration primary school (years 1-5) and 3 primary and practical schools providing education and development according to school education programmes. Education is compulsory for the first 9 school years, and is available up until the end of the school year in which a pupil reaches 17 years of age. Many primary schools extend their offer of education with classes specially focused on foreign languages, mathematics, sport, natural sciences or informatics and computing. Interest-based and recreational activities are offered to pupils through school activity groups or youth clubs in the city. Talented children and pupils can also attend music, dance, creative or musical-literary groups at several of the elementary art schools providing education in arts and crafts. Children are prepared here for attending secondary art schools and conservatories, or for study at university in art or teaching related subjects. Elementary art schools also organise preparatory studies, and basic level I and II grade studies.
